Important dates and deadlines including late fees for the upcoming academic year are listed below. It is strongly advised that degree candidates apply for the degree list even if there is uncertainty about completing the thesis defense and submission by the deadline, as there are no penalties for being removed from the degree list.

September Degree List. February Degree List. As soon as your defense is finalized, please email the Chemistry Education Office with the date, time, zoom link, and thesis title. Students scheduled to defend theses during the Spring and Summer terms can request space to present their theses remotely from campus. This request is for the student to be in a room individually, connecting with the thesis committee and attendees virtually Zoom, etc.

If you are interested in this option, as soon as your defense is schedule, please email building-access mit. Degree candidates should provide their advisor with a copy of the thesis at least two weeks before the defense and provide their thesis committee chair and member with a copy at least one week before the defense.

However, degree candidates should talk with their advisor, committee chair, and committee member to find out if they need the thesis further in advance or if there are preferred formats. Degree candidates should allow time in between their thesis defense and the submission deadline to make edits and submit the final copies.

Please note that Chemical Biology students receiving a PhD degree are required to present a seminar as part of the thesis defense. This seminar is open to the department. The degree candidate is responsible for providing the Chemistry Education Office with information about their thesis defense at least two weeks ahead of time. Following the seminar, the candidate will meet privately with the thesis committee.

The Institute has very specific requirements for thesis preparation. The specifications also include information about copyright and use of previously published material in a thesis. Do not rely on any templates or prior theses from your research group — they may not reflect the most current guidelines.

We have highlighted some especially important points below. The text of the thesis may be single- double- or one-and-a-half-spaced. The abstract, biography, notes, bibliography, and acknowledgment should be single-spaced. We recommend that you also consult the Sample Title Page.

Table of Contents The Table of Contents should include all parts of the thesis. This includes the title page, abstract, and anything else included in the thesis such as acknowledgements or a list of figures. Abstract Layout Each thesis offered for a graduate degree must include an abstract, preferably one single-spaced page, but never more than two pages generally less than words.

The abstract should be thought of as a brief descriptive summary rather than a lengthy introduction to the thesis. Doctoral candidates should keep their abstracts under words. Databases such as PQDT provide full-text searching of abstracts, so the presence of significant key words in a short abstract will facilitate access.

The abstract should immediately follow the title page. Please see the sample layout and abstract provided by the library. A general overview of the documents you will need to submit for thesis submission is available online here. Please carefully review the details below, including the file naming format. There are two steps to the final submissions process:. Please use reply-all to this message to indicate your acceptance of my thesis document and your recommendation for certification by my department.

Submit an online form with your thesis information to the MIT Libraries here. The information you provide must match the title page and abstract of your thesis. This form must be completed by the day of graduation. Digital Signatures. Please see here for a full guide with screenshots to using DocuSign to obtain digital signatures. DocuSign is Touchstone-enabled. You will be prompted to enter your email and you will then be able to log in using an MIT personal certificate or kerberos username and password.

If you run into any issues, please let Jennifer know. Thesis Hold Requests Details about requesting a thesis hold are available here and the requests are made to different offices based on the type of request. Please note that planned or pending submissions to scholarly journals related to thesis work will not be considered for thesis holds.

In order to best serve the educational, scientific, and social needs of graduate students in the Chemistry Department, it is critically important that Departmental leadership be appropriately informed of issues of importance to graduate students, ideally on an ongoing basis. Graduate student exit interviews provide information that alert the Department to acute issues that affect graduate students and provide data for longitudinal assessments of graduate student experience within the program.

Graduate exit interviews are administered to all graduate students departing the Chemistry Department. The exit interview applies equally to graduate students departing with completed degrees Ph. Your final signed thesis must be submitted before a postdoc appointment can start.

Be sure to state explicitly how your hypotheses fared. Any literature references in this chapter should be either parenthetical or should be limited only to technical matters. Note: Those using some type of qualitative research design, such as case studies, present results here as well. If you are doing a comparative case study dissertation, this chapter may be a series of short chapters about each case.

If your analysis produces some paradox, or some puzzle, or you are aware of some situation that might negate your results, it is probably helpful to address them in a chapter like this. Chapter Seven: Implications - - Pay a lot of attention to this chapter. This is where you bring the dissertation together. You explain the importance of your work.

Show how your results might be generalized to a wide range of alternate areas of interest. Chapter Eight: Summary and Conclusion s - - Summarize the dissertation, briefly restate the main conclusions, and suggest avenues for future work. Appendixes - - If your data are self-collected, an appendix presenting and explaining the data is useful, if not suggested.

If your operationalizations are controversial or especially novel, you may want an appendix to explain further. An appendix is a good place to present the results of alternate tests. If your dissertation is formal, a mathematical proof appendix is often expected. Excessive details for well-known procedures, or repetition of closely analogous items, should be avoided, but sufficient explicit information should be included to allow ready duplication of your work. A discussion section should not just recapitulate your results, but should also critically evaluate and discuss your results in the context of your overall effort and the larger research field.

Combination of results and discussion sections might be appropriate in some cases. Such a preliminary effort would be embarrassing to you and to your faculty advisory chair, since it reveals a glaring lapse of professionalism.
